What makes the 7 train more popular than the L train?

Seeing as they’re both the only subway lines that go east-west that don’t share tracks with other lines, as well as mostly running into Long Island, what makes the 7 more popular than the L across the entire route? Any parts of the L that may be more used than the 7?
