I have a fairly nice bike — nice enough that multiple people have commented about it in relation to the perils of locking it up in the city. While I also have a good lock, these comments, plus the endless feed of posts in this subreddit and my neighborhood subreddit about stolen bikes, make me quite nervous about locking it up for even an hour. I love the mobility that biking affords me, especially to parts of Brooklyn that are hard to access from Bushwick where I live, but leaving it out of my sight for even a little bit of time makes me nervous.
So, what are your rules of thumb when it comes to deciding whether you’ll bike somewhere and deal with the risk of locking up your bike? Right now, I’ll tolerate a substantially longer trip on the bus or subway if a) my bike will have to be left alone/out of my sight for more 30-40ish minutes, b) there isn’t substantial foot traffic near where I’m locking it up, or c) I won’t have the option to stop what I’m doing and check on my bike. I’m wondering if this is more or less cautious than the typical person on this sub.
Recently, I’ve let my bike in the following locations with no hitches:
- Flushing/Knickerbocker in Bushwick for 40 minutes at around 7pm
- Downtown Brooklyn by Hoyt-Schermerhorn for about an hour
- Near the public library in Ridgewood for about 30 minutes
- On Nostrand/Putnam in Bed Stuy for about 40 minutes.
- A block from Myrtle-Wyckoff for about 20 minutes.
Maybe I’m being too cautious? Or perhaps taking a bigger risk than others would?
