“The differences come down to cultural background of demographics which I realize many people won’t like to hear. Ridgewood has been populated back in the day by Dutch, Irish and German immigrants. My former landlords family came from Sicily in the 1970’s and at first they could not find an apartment in Ridgewood because they looked too dark to the German/Irish living there so they moved downhill toward Myrtle and Broadway. Over time more Europeans moved in but the mix changed, now Italian, Polish, Jews from the former Soviet Union, former Yugoslavian, Asian some Hispanics and Blacks too. There are parts of Ridgewood one could eat off the sidewalk and there is street cleaning only once a week.
It looks like Bushwick ended up with a different mix because once one crosses Wyckoff Ave there is more litter on the street, rats galore, more property damage and crime, noisy people hang out day and night. When I fume about this my partner says it is CULTURAL. True, they are from different cultures than most folks in Ridgewood. When I asked a good friend about why his people are littering in plain view of everyone and installing boomboxes on their cars he said in his country (a small island) there aren’t even sidewalks. Meaning how could I expect a person from there to look for a trash receptacle?
What I have described is only one aspect of Bushwick but it highlights some of the differences with Ridgewood. We could go on and on.”
