I’m moving to the area in a few weeks and just found a nice apartment. It’s an easy walk to the DeKalb stop. The neighborhood feels busy in parts, and quieter as I head toward Ridgewood or the Morgan stop. I’ve lived in Manhattan for 10 years and I’m used to walking everywhere — Lower Manhattan, Chinatown, even out at 3 or 4 a.m. I used to come to Bushwick for shows and to visit friends. I’m a tall, kind of butch woman, but sometimes I dress more femme, especially when going out to bars. I know to stay aware, but I’ve honestly never had any real trouble. That said, I’m hearing mixed things about crime in Bushwick right now. Some people say, “It’s safe, just stay alert.” Others warn, “Don’t use your phone outside, robberies are common.” It’s a bit hard to tell what’s real and what’s just fear. For context: I’m in my late 20s, I like going out — drinking, shows, bars — and I do use cannabis. I’m not super familiar with the area yet, so I’ll likely need to use my phone for directions at night while walking. Is that actually unsafe? I’ve heard South Bushwick or around the Wilson stop is where things can get sketchy, but I’ve never had issues near Morgan. Still, I want to be smart. So — what’s the real deal? Can I walk home from a bar in a dress, a little buzzed, checking directions on my phone without being a target? In the East Village, I can do that without much worry. Should I expect something different in Bushwick? I’ve always believed that if you move through spaces confidently and respectfully, you’ll usually be okay — but I also know things can happen. I just want a realistic sense of what to expect.
Alternatively any advice or takes on that street or area are welcome I’m coming out of a bad housing and life situation just need some ok times and less busy neighborhood
