I have a history of pediactric asthma. At the age of 17, my asthma became almost non existant, being only triggered by intense exercise. So, I was in a state of incomplete remission, little to no symptoms. So, I lived care free during my time in college.
I got into the bad habit of vaping in 2021 when I was 19. I am now 23 years old and stopped recently in July 2025.
Back in July 2025, I noticed my breathing became labored.
I’ve been in the ER twice recently because I feel short of breath, like I cant get a full breath of air in, and my Sp02 would dips to between 92 and 91, then it jumps back to 95 when I force myself to breathe. I recorded a video of myself and counted 6 or 7 respirations in one minute and I feel horrible.
I got discharged from Interfaith Hospital and Wyckoff Hospital in Brooklyn. My medical discharge paperwork from both places have falsely recorded vitals, specifically the amount of respirations. I was told because I’m not ‘dying’ there was nothing they can do. They told me to follow up with a specialist, they tried to force me on anxiety medications as if I’m some kind oy psych patient.
I have a cardiologist at Mount Sinai, and back in July I told him I would like to try and taper from 10mg Nebivolol to 5mg, to try and counteract the labored breathing. I achived this taper within 8 weeks.
My thought was, I could have potentially developed a drug allergy and can no longer tolerate beta blockers at all, even if it’s beta-1 selective.
I received a PFT test in mid August:
FEV1/FVC PRE at 69% FEV1/FVC POST at 84% It was determined that I have hyperinflation and air trapping in my lungs Normal gas exchange Significant bronchodilator response
After getting my bloodwork and analyzing my PFT, my pulmonologist tells me that I have Mild Asthma, Chronic Allergies and a Breathing Pattern Disorder (only because I told him I needed to yawn to get an adequate breath in).
The breathing pattern disorder doesnt make sense to me. I’m not holding breath on purpose or anything, I just inhale slowly and exhale like I’m blowing through a straw.
I had a Virtual follow-up appointment with pulmonologist during first week of October after using Symbicort for 1 month. He insisted I get checked for a Vocal Cord Dysfunction and an Allergy Specialist to address inflammation in my body towards environmental asthma triggers. He also wanted my eosinophil count to be lower, stating that I may have allergic asthma
Thing is, my eosinophil count was much higher, like around 12.2 in 2024, and I got it to lower to about 6.6 in September simply from losing weight. ICS doesn’t cause an immediate decrease in eosinophil count.
Would it be okay if I got a second opinion about my pulmonary issues from a different pumonologist?
Also, has anyone here taken beta blockers and completely come off them, and how did that go? Did your breathing improve when you discontinued them?
