As a recent PhD in Public Health from the University of Iowa and pre-COVID New Yorker (YES I stayed through the pandemic, this adds at least 5-10 years to my 2019 arrival) – the subway is the SAFEST it’s ever been.
It’s getting incredibly tiresome to listen and read countless lived experience accounts of violence and harassment on the subway. This undermines trust in our great, reliable, and safe public transportation. In fact, this constant fear mongering does not represent my own lived experience!
For example, I have lost track of the amount of times I have taken the L from Bedford to 3rd Ave with ZERO incidents. Also, I have taken the L from Bedford to Myrtle-Wyckoff a few times. NOTHING.
Therefore, your apprehension is invalid.
Also, your frustration with fare “hikes” is misguided. The fares should be upwards of $5-10 depending on willingness to pay. Increased fares for those able to pay also help cover those who choose to evade fares. I’m often shelling out $20 on cocktails so why not pay more to easily and quickly navigate the city? It’s cheaper than Uber Black from Gem Wine to north Williamsburg.
